Tony Shaw Workshop

Ancient. New. Innovative.

The first people of this land, the Indigenous people of Australia have an ancient culture.  For people listening to our story for the first time, the ways and culture of the Indigenous people will be new.  And when the ways of the Indigenous people are understood and adopted, they can be seen to be innovative.  The Indigenous people are culturally driven not by money or power, but by wisdom – doing things the right way, to keep things moving the right way, at the right time.

“Tony’s knowledge of Aboriginal History is outstanding and when intertwined with his own personal story, drives home the impact of past policies on generations that are still coming to terms with the impact of those policies on their lives and the lives of their families. As a Wongutha man, he also has very good knowledge of cultural issues and delivers this in a way that is witty, entertaining, and deeply moving.

I would not hesitate to recommend Tony to anyone or any organisation wanting to develop their understanding of Indigenous culture, in order to work more effectively with Aboriginal people and towards reconciliation.”

I really liked how Tony prefaced his presentation by explaining that everyone has their own ‘story’, none better or worse than another, just different. I think this was really important in me understanding that listening to the stories of individuals is just as critical as having an understanding of Australian Aboriginal history that may have common influence on stories.
